Happy Chinese New Year!

Since we’re still handing out red envelopes, I can still wish all two of our readers (hey Stef!) a happy Chinese New Year!  And sadly no, the picture above isn’t our haul of cash from this year, it’s our stack of envelopes that have been (will be?) given out by the 15th day.

For those unfamiliar with the custom- red envelopes are cash gifts that are typically handed out from elder to younger generations.  So usually you would receive envelopes from parents, grandparents, aunts/uncles etc…  However, once you get married, you are no longer considered a child, therefore you have to start handing out envelopes to the next generation (ie children of friends and siblings).  Also, it’s now the elder relative’s discretion as to whether to give you some extra pocket money as well (most choose to stop).  But wait, it gets even more complicated.  Those older single cousins?  You have to give them envelopes too, since they’re still, by custom, children…  Oh, and domestic helpers, employees, your favorite bus drivers… the list goes on- phew!

I won’t go into the details on how much to give, because honestly I have no idea.  This is G’s department.  There are apparently a couple of factors including market rate and past gifting amounts that all must be considered for each individual.  It’s complicated enough that a spreadsheet is needed to keep track.  Keeping track of which envelopes go to whom is made easier by the plethora of free red envelopes given out before the start of every new year.
