G and I stumbled upon Matsu awhile back on our way to eat at Torisho Taka (they are neighbors). The restaurant serves mid-ranged Japanese-French fare in a semi-formal setting, equally appropriate for a date night or business lunch. Since the set menu prices seemed reasonable and the reviews online were generally decent, we decided to try a little fusion one weekend.
The lunch prices are comparable to lunch deals available elsewhere (or next door for that matter), but diners have a few different price options to choose from for more variety or courses. Since this meal was breakfast/lunch, we elected to order the “Matsu Set” – a six course meal for $58.
Overall, the food was decent. Our favorite was the cream of burdock soup, accompanied by fresh-baked buns. The earthiness of the burdock was nicely accentuated by a dollop of truffle oil. And the buns, served piping hot, had a thin crispy exterior with a light and airy interior. The unusual (but successful) use of burdock as a soup really was the highlight of the meal. The rest of the courses were fine but not nearly as memorable.
Matsu seems to have settled into a spot where service, food, and ambience are all about average for this price point. There are no real highs nor lows, making it difficult for me to recommend or avoid this establishment. Perhaps the best way to position it is: if you’re in the mood for something more upscale than Ma Maison, but would prefer to not splurge on fine dining, then Matsu might just be right for you.
