I booked a table for Wild Rocket during Restaurant Week since I had never eaten there before and had always wondered about this dining mainstay started by a once hobbyist cook. So for $35 a person, I indulged my curiosity and dragged along G and our buddy T. Wild Rocket bills its cuisine as Modern Singaporean, or “Mod Sin”, and our meal could indeed be described up as Western fare with refined SE Asian flavors.
The starter was a “seafood crustacean oil spaghetti with sakura ebi”. The heavy reliance on shrimp could have easily resulted in cringe-worthy experience but was instead a pleasant reminder that prawns in the hands of good chefs can produce wonders. The indian-inspired lamb chops were nicely grilled and seasoned, served with a mildly tangy side of yogurt. Since G is not allowed to have lamb during her pregnancy, the restaurant gracefully accommodated her request and substituted a well-cooked fish instead. Dessert was a perfectly molten cake, tasty but not terribly exciting. Then again not every place can serve ice cream eggs.
Overall the food was good; service was excellent, and the ambiance was ok. I certainly wouldn’t object to another meal at Wild Rocket, but with my curiosity satisfied, I also don’t feel the need to propose another outing there any time soon.
